Chatsilog Revisited

Chatsilog Revisted (2010/2022)
Installation with video and photography

In Chatsilog Revisited, the Mail Order Brides (Eliza O. Barrios, Reanne Estrada, and Jenifer K. Wofford, who were introduced to each other by  Carlos Villa) recreate and update a 2010 video installation project originally developed with Villa for Green Papaya Art Project, Quezon City Metro Manila. The work addresses themes of connection, separation, and distance that resonate with the essence of Villa’s social/art practice, Filipino histories of migration and diaspora in general, and our contemporary era of everyday telepresence. The M.O.B. use their clever and culturally specific sense of humor and play to activate a poignant and personal memorial for Villa. The rotating sculptural renditions of silog (a traditional Filipino breakfast of eggs and rice) evoke shared meals of the past and invitations to future gatherings while honoring Villa's ability to conjure, conjoin and extend family.
