Manananggoogle

As an art collective working in corporate horror drag, MOB’s Manananggoogle reflects the injustice of globalized capital and establishes a visual expression of systems of exploitation and control through the lenses of drag and traditional Pilipino folklore/identity. Depicting a fictitious corporate technology company with an all-female leadership team, the artistic collaborative group Mail Order Brides (MOB) presents a new manifestation of an on-going projected called Manananggoogle, a technology company with a sinister-mythological-feminist twist. Traditionally, the “Mananangal” is known to be a vampire-like mythical creature of the Philippines, a malevolent, man-eating, blood-sucking monster or witch capable of severing its upper torso and sprouting huge bat-like wings to fly into the night in search of its victims. It is also a story that expresses the deep roots of misogyny in traditional cultures, and how these injustices are perpetuated. Since the witch is always an independent woman living alone at the edge of the village, this ancient tale finds new footing in the identity of the elite female corporate executive.
